Case Study: Transforming a Steep Garden in Wellswood, Torquay
Project Overview
Located in Wellswood, Torquay, this project involved converting a steeply sloping, unusable garden into a stunning multi-level outdoor space. The client struggled with maintenance and had large areas of dead space due to the extreme gradient.
Before & After
Before: A heavily sloping garden with difficult-to-maintain grass, sloping borders, and half the space unusable.
After: A complete transformation into four level tiers, each with a distinct purpose, held back with strong retaining walls and integrated drainage systems to prevent pressure against the Cornish stone walling.

Design & Build Process
The design divided the garden into four functional tiers, with a narrow ramp for access to all levels. High-quality materials such as copper slate paving, Cornish stone, and seeded turf were used, ensuring durability and style.
One of the biggest challenges was the steep gradient combined with only 1-meter-wide access. To manage this:
A soil sifter was used to recycle over 1,000 tons of soil, reducing waste.
A 1.5-ton dumper transported materials in and out.
The team battled harsh Atlantic weather throughout the build.
Final Outcome
The transformation exceeded expectations, creating a stunning, functional garden that no longer requires constant maintenance. The property now has a versatile outdoor space that adds significant value and can be enjoyed daily.
